In the mountains with Bach

When I come to stay in the mountains periodically I find old scores that I used the first years of study.
I realize now only how much they were useful for the development and maintenance of a discrete manual motility.
First of all the series of Inventions and Symphonies by Bach.
What would classical music be if there had not been the great Johann Sebastian Bach, prolific and fruitful in private life (20 children of 2 wives) as in the composition.
Between 1717 and 1723 he was Kapellmeister at the court of Prince Leopold of Anthalt - Köthen but he could also devote himself to the composition of studies for his family, in fact the Inventions belong to the  “Büchlein für Wilhelm Friedemann Bach” , for his first born.


Back to us, the invention number eight in F major is a canon with 2 voices at the octave and I enjoy performing it especially on my old Steinway, faithful companion until the eighth year of Conservatory then replaced by a younger but cooler Jamaha.
The newly purchased instrument was able to create such a warm and round sound, I remember it from the day of our first meeting.
Choosing a piano is really like finding a soul mate, you have to fall in love, it has to happen something inside.
You enter these rooms , usually huge and often underground , you find yourself in front of the instruments desiring to be adopted and taken to live in a warm living room above a beautiful Persian carpet (usually carpets mitigate the rumble), dreaming of being touched from gentle female fingers or from energetic and wise masters.

The choice proceed slowly , one by one on the short list reduces to 2 or 3 lucky and then finally the spark clicks and you know who will be the chosen one , you feel it in the deep as it vibrates at your touch.
Pure magic.

My stupendous Steinway , early 20th century heirloom in rosewood , now after years of actual study , has practically turned into a harpsichord and is well prepared to tune canons and fugues.
So, taking advantage of these flood days, I delight to revive the ancient studies.
