Sound creates reality

 

Here I am, again in the Julian Alps, far from Verona's plain where I spent 2 lively months  engaged with singers and directors between glitz and glamour of Arena.
 Sheltered from the chaotic city world, in this natural oasis, everything is downsized, neither shops nor wishful thinking beyond the necessary.
 I find my old creaky Steinway but with a round and crystalline sound thanks to the precious sounding board.
 I need to clean up, to remove the dust accumulated in the city and I get the first piece by Schumann's Fantasiestücke, "Des Abends".
 I often go to the keyboard not knowing what I want to study, and it is as if I found the right pieces at the right time, they are looking for me.
 As I make it mine, I notice the serenity and well-being that emanates.
 With a regular pattern from the beginning to the end of setsuplets semiquaver's bars a melody is explained in the high voice of almost always concatenated notes that forms soft and delicate waves, sometimes reproposed in the middle register as an answer. The bass supports the whole and gives sound depth, confirming harmony.
 It is amazing how through this genial simplicity one is transported to a world of bliss, almost out of time, and one feels cleansed of the burdens of the day gone.
Totally guessed the title "In the Evening" to
lull you hipnotically to a carefree sleep.

 Quite the opposite with "Traumes Wirren". Here Schumann describes one of his irrational moments, an agitated, confused dream.
 Notes follow one another at a boundless speed, fast-paced rhythms with small pauses almost to turn back to see if you have outran the phantom chaser, an idyllic central moment of tranquility and then escape again.
 At a certain point the sound of the piano assumes a plenty of sonority, the hands jump everywhere at the two ends of the keyboard, and I must admit I feel a particular satisfaction in feeling enveloped by this sound which becomes form, consistency, almost like columns that become tangible brick by brick.
